They are the domesticated version of the Vicuna who are part of the Camel family. If I moved back to Pennsylvania, I could try to raise a Vicuna in Altoona. :-))
I knit and one of my joys is the yarn from this animal. I love it. So soft and squishy! It's so very nice when mixed with silk. I think this winter I'll be knitting a couple of shawls with some of the alpaca yarn that I have in my stash (what my holding of yarn is called).
I once bought 2 sweaters made from alpaca made in Peru for a mere $40.00 each. They were indeed so sooffftt and fluffy. Alas I outgrew them and a moth went to town on one of them. I could not find anyone to sell me anymore of these sweaters afterwards.

And that's why being able to knit is great. Get the alpaca, find the right pattern and away you go.
Right now, I'm in a lace shawl/sock shawl phase :)

I would if I could BUT I only knit knots...LOL No I have other talents but knitting is not one of them. A retiree knitted a sweater once for me but she is unable to do so now.
