Happy Memorial Day to all veterans and their families. A day to remember my beloved Grandpapa; who served in the Marines during WWII, in the pacific theater. God bless and Hugs
My father also served in the Marines in the pacific theater during WWII. I wonder if they knew each other. He was on Iwo when they raised the flag on the other side of the island.

Did your Grandpapa talk about his war experiences? I find that more & more young people like to hear stories about the past. May they learn from them. (And I'm not just joking about party line phones w/dial up--5 digit call numbers & the amazing "microwave" or did they call it Radar Range? Peace to you & yours on this solemn day.

BayGrannie, my father did not talk about his war experiences until about the last five years of his life. He had severe PTSD and was somehow able to hide that from us children our whole lives, until the very end. He was a functional alcoholic but we did not know what his demons were. I'm proud to call him "Dad". He earned a bronze star for rushing out in front of our troops to pull back the wounded and take them to the ambulance he drove. My first husband and my son are also veterans. My father passed away just three years ago and I am really feeling the loss today.

You know, nlb, it is a shame that back then men would/could not speak of such demons. I am so glad that he WAS finally able to speak of his pain. You must be so proud of your dad--it took a lot of pain off of him. I'm sure that yesterday you must have felt some part of him. Be comforted knowing that you all made personal pain go away & he came home to his family & once again bravely chose to return to his family. Treasure that Bronze Star & try to remember he had the heart, & most likely his family he so loved that compelled him to do his best during the war. He so wanted his famly to be safe that he fought against Germany, Japan, & Russia--all at his own risk. It didn't matter at the time, but did eventually catch up w/him. That's where the severe love he had for his loved ones finally meshed. As a retired pharmacist, many a Vet would come in & tell me some of the facts of the War (that I used to call stories). Bless them all and thank you for sharing this important message--they were, indeed, the Greatest Generation! And you inherited his genes. Be great--already sounds like you are!

It would be really cool if they did know each other NL! My grandfather was also there when the flag was raised at Iwo Jima. He fought with Filipino guerillas against the Japanese. Like your father he wouldn't talk about his service in the war. He had a purple heart and a silver star and another medal which I can't remember. My grandmother told us not to ask him about what happened while he was in service because he would get nightmares. When I was sixteen he had a mental breakdown. At that time it was called "delay shell shock". It is now called PTSD. He was also an alcoholic. When my mother was 13, he started going to AA meetings and became a Baptist minister. He is one of the most influential people in my life. My grandmother and him raised my sister, brother, and me after my parents second divorce. My uncle (his son), is also a veteran as is my second husband. Even though I have remarried, I also think of him and feel his loss. God bless you with comfort. Hugs and blessings.

BayGranny, my Dad was AWOL when he married my mom. They had one night together then he went back and into the brig so he did not have children yet. Even so, he was only 17, his parents had to sign for him to enlist and he drove ambulance because he said he wanted to be in a position where he could serve his country and not have to kill anyone. I am very proud to be his #3 (out of 5) daughter.

NL, you are blessed to have had him as a Dad, and I was blessed to have had my Grandpapa! I am very proud of the fact that they served our country and in a odd way protected both of us even though were not born yet.
Sorry not to have told you before but I am going into hospital this morning, for how long I do not know, it is to have another go at healing this ulcer. Will talk to you when I am back. God bless you all, I know that I can rely on your prayers.
Praying for you, dear lady. God bless you, your medical team, and all who will be caring for you.
