Elijah, places like this are my consolation for the long winters. I'd still prefer to move southwest but not with all these fires. God has said no to my efforts to move to keep me safe I think.

Why not move to someplace on the edge of the Mojave Desert, like Bakersfield, CA? It's warm all year round, the air is clear, and you'd be safe from forest fires because there's nothing to burn!

I was out that way two years ago. We stayed in Kernville next to the National Sequoia Forest. We were on our way to Kings Canyon and Google had routed us thru Bakersfield but that was way out of the way so we used GPS and almost ended up lost. The fool machine started telling us to make impossible turns which would have had us leaving the road and plummeting down a mountainside. We finally came across a bar and grill in the middle of nowhere and I insisted we stop to get directions. When we had gotten on that road we had turned way from our destination which I could tell but my husband wouldn't believe me that the machine was giving the wrong advice.
Luckily a teacher was at the bar and he came out and told my husband where to go. We were about and hour or so northeast of Bakersfield by then. I just looked to see about your suggestion because there was a fire when we left Kings Canyon for church going west about 45 minutes.
Lots of orange groves. So anyway here is a fire report just posted...
A new fire that ignited overnight 9 miles northeast of Bakersfield, California has forced the closure of State Highway 178. The fire, named Cattle Fire, is just inside the boundary of the Sequoia National Forest. There is a report that the spread of the fire has been temporarily stopped at about 93 acres.
Would love to spend a few weeks around here with my paints. If I could paint like anyone I'd choose John Singer Sargent. He is a wonderful draftsman and his colors are always spot on.
Hoping you can get out to enjoy the gorgeous fall scenery.
