They could also be an Italian cookie called taralli.

These are not bagels, they are a type of pretzel one can find in Greece, Turkey and the countries around it. They are quite dry, and where I come from they were usually handed to caroling children at Christmas time together with apples, nuts, sweets and the occasional coin. I even have a recipe for them :-)
More hole than bread. I am from NY originally, and never saw bagels like these. Here in Montana, all we get is bread baked to look like bagels, so I make my own.

Yep, never saw bagels like these...and I'm Jewish- I've seen A LOT of bagels!!!!
