Why in the world would anyone need a place this huge? Really too much for any country.

These palaces are so incredibly huge. Hundreds and hundreds of rooms, furnished with really expensive things - tapestries, oil paintings, etc. It's amazing how much money was spent to placate the kings and queens while the commoners often starved. The Russian peasants had it incredibly difficult, which was one of the things that lead to the Tsarist system being overthrown.
