They are nice when electricity is off as it is sometimes for a week or so, but I hate lifting & cleaning up the messes. I love the heat.

Fiestyolelady, I know about fireplace messes. Many years ago I had an old vacuum cleaner, a bullet-shaped tank-type thing with a long hose that had been my mother's. It had great suction. I had a ceiling in my house at that time that was supposed to be acoustical, white with tiny bumps on it and had dark decorative wooden beams that went clear across the room several times. One day I was vacuuming cobwebs from the beams when it began to "snow" in my living room. I thought the ceiling was falling! It took me several minutes to figure out that the snow was ashes and I had the back end of the machine pointed directly into the fireplace while I was looking up! Funny, but a mess!
