How simple life used to be, but it was not an easy life for many. I often think of one of my father's forebears who sailed on the Mayflower with his brother, nephew, and a servant. Having sailed from Leiden, Holland, I am sure this sort of settlement was a common sight to these brave souls. The freezing seaside they and their shipmates settled in was a scary blank canvas peopled with inhabitants that were much more savvy hunters and gatherers. I imagine the sights of Holland seemed better then than they did before they sailed the inhospitable ocean in the early 1600s.
I've been to Copenhagen, don't remember seeing any windmills, but, I barely scratched the surface of seeing Denmark. Somehow, the train I took from Hamburg to Copenhagen required a ferry boat, but taking the train back to Hamburg didn't.
I have been to Denmark 3 times - have friends there - and trust me, it's not boring. Sometimes the barns will be an extension of the house (with a suitably long hall because of the smell) so that the people can care for their animals in the winter. It's a beautiful country!
