My mother's side of the family are from the Blue Ridge Mountains in the tri-state area where VA, TN, and NC meet. I miss those mountains incredibly!

Beautiful. Preparing for hurricane Irma. Looks like we will get it in Florida. Hopefully it goes East or West of us. We are in the middle of the state.

We're center of the state too. I'm praying it goes out to sea. Were you here in 2004 for Charley, Frances and Jean?

I certainly hope it doesn't go into the Gulf. They don't need more grief. Praying that weather fronts will push it off the Florida coast and out into the Atlantic. Still, we'll be putting in our supplies just in case. We're in the n.e. corner of FL.

KarenBuglet, started to write and somehow lost it. Yes, I was here then with my 94 year old mother. Now trying to get things in order for this terrible storm. At 80, I just do a few things at a time in order to secure the house--plants and outside trash cans will go in garage if possible. Was supposed to go to Connecticut on Tuesday but cancelled that trip and will go in October. Have 3 cats and didn't want my cat person to have to come. Also, if anything would happen, I want to be here. I can't believe that 2 hurricanes are back to back and BAD! Have a good rest of the day.

Hurricane season runs from Jun 1 to Nov 30. Besides the rain, flooding and general all-around damage, it's frequently 85-95 degrees when a hurricane hits. A lot of people think, "Well, the storm is gone so it will be better now." NOT. Often times power is out for days or, in some cases, weeks and it's STILL 85-95 degrees! Aarrrggghhhh

Yeah were preparing for this hurricane as well. Were on the west coast of the state. One of the hurricanes completely wiped out an area - Port Charlotte. Recall Wilma and Katrina. Even Hugo and George - for those two were up to the middle of the state. Many people that we know stayed here.

Regarding this hurricane - to preapre - you need to board up the windows. Then you need to remove all furniture off a lanai - screened porch or pool area. If these aren't removed these items will become missiles. You will need bottled water - batteries, canned food for yourselves - hubby tried to get bottled water and spam. All of it is gone. Not really happy that these two hurricanes are coming back to back.

Don't I know it - and the humidity! After Charlie, we would work out in the yard cutting back damaged limbs and clearing debris only to come inside to no air conditioning or even a fan. I learned from that and bought a battery operated fan. Wouldn't you know it died on me the other day and I haven't found a replacement.

Looks like it might turn a little more East. Trying to get everything done by Saturday morning. My neice and husband are coming over today and will do anything they can for me.

I was here back in 2004 with all of those hurricanes. Was even here when hurricane Katriina and Wilma hit. Was here during hurricane Charlie as well. Elijah - have them remove all furniture from the outside. You will need bottled water, batteries and canned food - or food that you don't have to cook. You will need your windows boarded up as well. Be prepared that you could be without power for days or a week. All of your food could be spoiled as well. Stay safe everyone! Becareful about going outside after the storm - a live power line could be down.

In 2004 when we had hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne it was miserable. Temps went back into the 90s after the storms and power was out for quite a while. We were fortunate enough after the first two to have a friend who loaned us one of his generators. What a relief! We were able to plug in the refrigerator, the coffee pot!, fans and a lamp. That did it for us. We bought a generator that fall!

I'm elijah13. I'm in the Orlando area. I'm as well prepared as I can be. Next door to me is another story. Nothing done yet. They have 2 things that if they are not moved soon, will put a note in their mailbox telling them what is "on my side" that needs to be moved. If not moved by Saturday I will move them and put them in their driveway! I know I'm bad but I don't care. I don't want them to hit my house. Wish me luck.

The neighbor above me isn't even here. There out of the country at the moment. Hubby contacted the mgt. and told them about their a/c. The guy comes and maintains the a/c. Then leaves and leaves the filter in their driveway.

Hi Karen. We got a lot of tree trash, but no flooding and no damage to our house or cars. Lost power Mon 1am but we have a generator that we can plug in the fridge, coffee pot, tv, fans and a lamp or two. Got power back yesterday (Thurs) morning at about 2am. Glad to hear you are ok.

There are places - businesses that still closed! I just tried to get a cup of coffee today. Hubby went to fill the gas tank and some places weren't even open. I was just asked to give someone 4 recipes....I know their going to say to themselves omg! One of my neighbors emailed me and said her hubby was flying in the weekend of the hurricane. I had to email her back and say I highly doubt they'll let you fly to the state. Told her it would be great to see them both. They live outside of London.

For those of you who think "IT" will never happen, I have a story for you. My brother and I had a misunderstanding in 1991. We had no contact since then. He was found by searching the web, I wrote a nice letter, he responded and I will be flying across the country for a week's visit in Nov. I'm so excited.

Covering the Bird

We visited our newly married daughter, who was preparing her first Thanksgiving dinner. I noticed the turkey thawing in the kitchen sink with a dish drainer inverted over the bird. I asked why a drainer covered the turkey.

Our daughter turned to my wife and said, "Mom, you always did it that way."

"Yes, " my wife replied, "but you don't have a cat! "

"One way to make sure crime doesn't pay would be to let the government run it." Ronald Reagan

I am watching Blue Bloods at the moment and the main family is also Reagan. Have always liked Tom Selleck and enjoy all the stories within the series.

Good night and God bless. Hugs.

Hey Aussie,
We had problems like the turkey in engineering classes. It's supposed to teach us not to assume anything when looking for a solution.
Hugs.

Aussie, there's another story along the same line...

A young husband was watching his bride cook dinner. He asked, "Why do you cut the ends off the roast before you cook it? " "I don't know, my mom always does it that way."

The next day, the new bride called her mother and asked why she always cut the ends off the roast before cooking. "I'm not sure. That's the way MY mother always did it."

So the young bride called her grandmother and asked the same question. The answer? "So it would fit in the pan! "

And that's how traditions are started...

Abacii - And what conclusion did you engineers come up with before you heard the punch line??? I bet there were many various solutions!
abacii
Sep 7, 2017
We had crazy solutions, but the clue is confusing. Why trim both ends of the roast if all you want to do is shorten the length? We concluded it was to square off the edges for carving. This was one of the few problems I got completely wrong. They were a lot of fun! I never had to do the turkey.

I've lived near mountains before but not quite this high. I think mountain views are just as pleasing and changeable as sea views. I think I prefer sea views, but both are wonderful.
