Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities. The castle is high on a hill overlooking Princes Street and its gardens. The city is historical and cosmopolitan --- they don't always blend, but they do there. It is also a festival city --- the New Year festival is a favorite.
If you go, try August when the Royal Military Tattoo is held on the grounds of the Castle. It is impressive and ends with a lone piper on the ramparts with a flood light on him. Acquire tickets very early!

---- and more! This is the view of the castle from our hotel room. It is beautiful by day and by night when it is floodlit. From the ramparts you can see the coast --- the Firth of Forth.
So impressive this castle. The heights it was built on must have given the inhabitants a sense of protection. Invaders would be worn out by the time they scaled those levels in order to breach the walls.
What a nice view! Have beve been to Scotland. Most of my travels are finished. Too old --at least my body says so--to do too much walking around and that's what is required on most tours. Have to tour via the internet.
I've been there a couple of times and it isn't as pretty on the inside that I thought it would be but when you stand at the leading edge of the main entrance, the view all the way downhill of the main drag thru Edinburgh you can see Holyrood Palace at the end on the right. That is where the Queen stays when she's in town. The food in Scotland is outstanding!!
