OzSomeOne, here in Alaska we often find peonies for sale in florist shops. We're one of the largest producers of peonies (grown outside, too! ) in the US. Our season usually runs from May through August and the blooms are exported all over the world. They're very popular as wedding flowers.

Thanks Aknan - very interesting. I wonder why I never see them in flower shops here in Ks? My mother had them at her wedding, but that was in 1939! and they only used what they grew themselves in those days. Nowadays they are very popular for decorating graves at Memorial Day. I used to have 2 rows about 50' long and people would stop and ask to cut some, but in the last few years more than half have died and I get very few blooms anymore. I think it's just gotten too hot and dry & they're too far from my house to water properly.

They definitely don't care for heat! I think most flower shops don't stock them on a regular basis because the growing season in the lower 48 is so short.
God bless you all.
