I allowed my son to raise white rats when he was about 8 or 9. I'm sure some of you have heard stuff like, "Oh, please Mom! All the kids have them (with big brown misty eyes)! " I kinda got used to them, tho' it was never a real love affair for me. They can't handle temperature extremes so I had to let their cages come in the house. They were messy and tossed their sawdust and even some food out of their cages. We solved that by putting cages in the bathtub that could easily be sanitized. One of them, Gizmo, got sick. We put him in a shoe box and took him to the vet. Other customers asked what we had in the box. When they were told, some moved away from us a bit farther!
I had two pet rats. Max and Matilda. Very smart and clean.
They never bite when raised as babies. Even adults are easy to tame. Highly recommend them over hamsters or Gerbils. Trustworthy critters.
