Today would have been my mothers 75th birthday. It hardly seems possible since I lost he so long ago when she was 38. It was a snowy afternoon 2 days before Christmas and she was in a car accident while out trying to finish up some shopping. Thankfully my brother survived despite being ejected out of the car. I still miss her every day and smile when I think of how she would be enjoying her great grandchildren right now. {{Hugs}} to all my puzzling friends. I think of you all as my extended family. God bless and stay well.
How old were you? Were you raised by your dad? Is your brother older or younger than you?
What a horrible Christmas for all of you. I am sure your mother is pouring down love on you both from heaven.
Happy birthday to your mom, jazz.

Thank you all for the kind words. I can always count on you puzzlers to lift my spirits.
Pixipixil - I was almost 19 when we lost my mom and the oldest of 3. My brother is the youngest and as you can imagine was very traumatized by the accident and had 'survivors guilt' at the tender age of 14. My dad left the family just before my brother was born. He wanted us to go back to NY to live with him but we couldn't imagine living with his 'new family'. His wife was very manipulative and other children were difficult too. Long story not so short - I sued my dad for custody and won. We 3 siblings stayed in CT and managed to work through things. I think my mom would have been very proud of all of us. I'm so grateful to her for teaching me so many things in our short time together.
Good night friends and God bless you all.

You are a very brave person, jazz. Thank you for sharing with us. I notice you said three sibs and mention one brother. How old was your sister? What are they doing today? Do you still live near eachother?

As usual C4J knew just the kind of puzzle I ABSOLUTELY LOVE. Since school will be starting in about 3 weeks, this school supply puzzle is apropos. Doubt today's kids use slates and chalk though.
What year was this puzzle about. I never had to use a "slate" in school and that's been quite a few years. I also doubt that the slates they used to use were not edged in wood! Probably just a piece of slate--if you were lucky. Quick puzzle.
