I think if I've learned anything about friendship, it's to hang in, stay connected, fight for them, and let them fight for you. Don't walk away, don't be distracted, don't be too busy or tired, don't take them for granted. Friends are part of the glue that holds life and faith together. Powerful stuff. – Jon Katz
Yesterday I found that a very dear friend of mine had passed away. She was in a nursing home and I spoke with her before Christmas and she sounded very cheery, but I knew from the things she said that she was deep into dementia. I put off calling her again because I was so sad to see her go down this road, but plucked up the courage yesterday and when I asked how she was the nurse said "oh she died six months ago". Nice way to tell me. So I wrote this poem and want to share it with all of you.
Do you ever feel
That life has passed you by.
That it's so very fleeting,
A moment in your eye.
Friends of many years
Suddenly not there,
Thinking of missed opportunities
To have told them that you care.
Don't waste another minute,
Don't put off a chance to call,
No matter the circumstances
Don't be afraid, don't stall.
And if perchance you find
The friend is no longer there,
Remember your time together
And the adventures you did share.
The love and all the laughter,
The times you were kept afloat
When life is not so kind
You'll know you didn't miss the boat.

She was from Canada and had come to Australia to live a long time ago with her mother and brother both deceased. She was a Churches of Christ ordained minister and I know she is with her mother and brother and most of all with the Lord.

Beautiful poem, aussie. I volunteer for a hospice group where I live and dementia, and Alzheimer, are terrible diseases to watch as someone you love lives with it. Their bodies are there, but their minds aren't. It's like watching them die twice. You, and your friend's soul, will be in my prayers.

As one person wrote, don't remember who, "Friends are the family you choose for yourself", or something along that line!

It's cold comfort, I know, AS, but if she was deep in dementia, she probably wasn't aware of you not calling. You'll see her again when you get Home, and she'll understand.

Also, if you called at Christmas time and she "died six months ago", you spoke to her not long before she passed.

Hi abacii, I had never been much interested in poetry and one day I had visited a Christian family whose daughter was going to the USA as an exchange student and they were concerned about her going into a non-Christian environment. I came home and was thinking about our conversation and quite suddenly I got a poem and that was in August of 1979 and God has blessed me with many poems since. I keep a book with the poem title, name of the poem and number of the poem and that one as No 664. So a long-winded answer to your question, but thought it may be of interest you. Hugs abacii and since it is already 4th July here in Australia, HAPPY 4TH JULY to all my USA friends on here!!!!! Hugs

Dear nborchardt - in my experience God gives you gifts to share and there may be those who really need to see what you write. Please prayerfully consider you decision to keep them to yourself. It would be nice to see them posted on here and you may be surprised at the reaction you get. Loving hugs.

All our gifts are God-given even the ones we don't even know about. I had the talent for teaching Sunday School which I never thought of doing in my whole life. God does work in mysterious ways and gives us talents to do His glory. Have a blessed day.

Sorry you lost your friend Aussie. The one thing I do for people I was once friends with but are not in my life now and I have no way to contact them is to pray for them.

And that's the best thing you can do, Robert. Prayer is the gold of the Kingdom of God, and He charges no interest on transactions.
