Macaroons are basically coconut. Macarons can be filled with just about anything, including savory fillings instead of sweet ones.

Taffi and aknan --- thank you so much for the clarification! I knew what macaroons were (and like them), but didn't know what macarons were. At first I thought it was a misspelling! Then I saw it some other times and guessed it was something separate from macaroons. Thank you!
