I have two quilts from Kentucky that mother in law had in her cedar chest. They are over 150 years old and I will love them until the end. Quilting and quiliing I will go. Loved this puzzle
My grandmother and her eight sisters made quilts --- every stitch by hand. They would get together regularly to work on one quilt at a time. Most of them were near sighted, but didn't need their glasses for close work. Sitting around the edges of the quilt, they would put their glasses in the middle of it. When their children came home from school they had to find their mother's glasses in the middle of the quilt! All the families stayed on for dinner and a family get-together.
I understand quilts were more than a thrifty way to use old fabric scraps...they were like a scrapbook with each piece of cloth attached to a cherished memory.
Do you think the phrase to patch things up might derive from quilting?
