My father and brother were both great RR enthusiasts. Have used RR to get from Albany to NYC. Nicer than bucking thruway traffic. I wish there were some trains that operated like the loop buses in DC where you buy a ticket and can get on and off for the day. I guess with the distances trains go a day isn't enough. I'd love to see the scenery along the CA coast by train but would find not being able to get off at a spot that's particularly interesting frustrating. Since my husband insists on doing all the driving I take lots of pix from the road as we travel. Sometimes the only good view of a place is from the middle of some highway.

I used to take the Coast Starlight between Seattle and Portland, or Seattle and San Francisco. Maybe one day I'll take another scenic train trip, but with a sleeping compartment!

I remember when there was a rail pass good for 30 days. At least I think I remember that. I know there was such a pass for Greyhound, and one for European rail. I think there was for Amtrak too. Does anybody else remember that?
that was a longtime ago
