What a beautiful pear. I've never seen one like that. I like anjous and the little red ones. My mother bought Bartlett's all the time and I thought all pears were grainy but since discovering Forelles and Anjous I have taken a liking to them.
Wishing the discovery of something new to like.
I think the best eating pear is the Harry and David Royal Riviera Pear (Comice) grown in Medford, Oregon. Check them out in their catalog. ummm

I grew up next to the Bartlett family. Really nice people. We were sledding one winter and I accidentally crashed through the fence in their front yard. Bartlett pears can be eaten raw, but are designed for cooking (pies, tarts, scooped out pear shells).

Bmoo, I agree with you. The Comice (Royal Riveria) is absolutely fantastic. You can practically eat them out of the skin with a spoon.

I didn't know that. They certainly are very juicy, but although I have had them cooked that grittiness still is there.
abacii--for some reason your account makes me think of the TV ad with the Smucker's boys. So Norman Rockwell. Sounds like you had a wonderful childhood.

Pixi, except for Bartletts, I peel my pears, especially the D'Anjou line. The skin is gritty, but the flesh is nice.

I peel them also. I don't remember if my mother did or not. I like them raw as part of a salad with nuts, olives and raisins.

If you like those, you will probably like the Forelles also. They are a bit pricey but worth it.
Love fresh pears especially English Conference pears, which I enjoy just before they are ripe and also when ripe. The one in the puzzle looks like a Williams pear it is also nice and can be very juicy when ripe. It is possible that we may have rain at the weekend if so it will be the first in 5 weeks and very welcome.

Great news - all out of the cave and safe. The Australian doctor who was the last to come out, found that his Dad who was also his best mate, had passed away while he was tending to those boys for several days. So sad for him.
The extraction of these young folks had the world on edge. Bless the doctor who was with them. Finding someone qualified to make the swim into the cave and readily available was probably a deciding factor in his attending to them, but losing his father while away was tragic. Yet each has its own blessing.

I'm glad the Doc's father had one more chance to be proud of him.
