I like that quote. It is similar to "Remember that you are not a body with a soul. You are a soul with a temporary body. It helps put what seems like an overwhelming problem into perspective.

My 90 year old father-in-law learned last week that he had stage four cancer that had spread throughout his body. He decided to not treat it and was looking forward to dying quickly, but he wanted a "Celebration of Life" while he was still alive. He had been to many funerals, and he wanted to hear for himself all the nice things people would say about him, and the beautiful sermon his favorite pastor would give. We all got together with him and planned out the service the way he wanted it and decided to have it in two weeks. We picked all his favorite hymns and decided who would give the eulogy. We went through all the old family pictures for a slide show, and we laughed and reminisced all day long. We started inviting people, and everyone seemed to think it was a good idea. After we all left last night and the house quieted down, he passed away quietly. I like to think that he had his "Celebration of Life" all day while planning the service with his wife, five children and their spouses, a few of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his beloved Pastor and several friends from his church. We'll still have the service in two weeks for friends and family, but Dean won't be there. He doesn't have to be. He heard what he needed to hear, and passed quickly before he could suffer too long. Rest in Peace, Dean Rogers.

What a beautiful story and ending to your father's-in-law life. What a joyous day that must have been for him and how comforting to all of you to give him what he wanted to have before he passed. That was so nice. When we had a graveside service for my mother, we all talked about the things she liked and things she had said to us. Then we went to eat at her favorite restaurant.

Thank you all for your kind words. I have been present for the deaths of four people in my life. Tho' they all were different, the overwhelming feeling for all of them was: Beauty. Beauty at that moment when they pass from this world into the next. The relief as they leave this imperfect body behind. The calm as they end all the struggles they had in this life. And the quick glimpse of Joy in their eyes as they enter into Heaven.
