That's what's called an "eyebrow" window; in the attic.

My guess would be an attic. It might be there just to let light in.

It's probably an attic now, but it may have originally been the servants' quarters. A house this size (I think I see another wing in the background) would have needed a full-time staff to keep it clean!

Some years ago I knew a J Doty, a man, who had had damage to his vocal chords and could only whisper loudly when he spoke. I realize it would be a gazillion to one shot if that were you.

I was looking at this house again and where I got the idea there was an eyebrow window in the roof I'll never know. There are three gable windows and a 'widow's walk' on the peak of the roof.
Beautiful...and I am envious of the owner. If it were mine, I would feel like I died and went to heaven. I wonder what state this is in? I think I would even take the snow for this one.
