Since some of these chinese and japanese buildings were built so very long ago, they built them this way so that the flat (or tipped up) part of the roof would catch water, strain it and use in place of running water?? I would have thought of that since I was raised in a house with no running water. I believe that the designers did so with practibility as well as beauty.
